There's a possibility the UK’s highways will be welcoming driverless cars as soon as 2019, a group of technology businesses has hinted at.

Called the Driven Consortium, the gathering is aiming to test autonomous cars between London and Oxford, with the vehicles being tested for “all safety-critical driving functions”.

The Government will give funding of £8.6 million for the endeavour, which will also look into how to protect data, cyber security, and how driverless cars should be insured.

A fleet of six autonomous vehicles, which will be linked to each other wirelessly and be able to talk to each other will feature in the project.
